Artist's Comments

One of my first oils (late 2006), I did this at the same time as my portrait of Nick. This is my friend Ted at our university Refair, standing around in her garb. The shadows on her face (that's right, it's not facial hair!) were so neat that Emers took a photo, then I decided to use it as reference. I like using oils this way, with watercolour brushes and dry rub-ins on Crescent board. I apologize for the gap in the scan, I had to piece it together.

Again, very nice. It would seem that you have been using this medium for quite a while from this picture. Go renfaire!

Thanks! This is an approach prescribed by Ed for our first oil painting. We gessoed a board and did the underdrawing. There's a layer of acrylic that I've allowed to show through, that gives it the brown undertones. And there's more Liquin medium on there than oil paint! It's a fun method.

I wish I knew what all that ment, but it sure seems to work well. I'll just have to hijack a painting class and learn me sum artz. ;)

Well this is just lovely. Something feels incomplete about it, I think the choppiness, but I think that in this case that ADDS to the whole thing. It's wonderful.

Thank you! It was intended to be a practice, and I has never worked with oil before. Hence the finger-painted look - I had no idea how to work with the stuff.
